(ST. LOUIS, MO) The Arch Rival Roller Girls have placed two finalists in Derby News Network’s “Best of 2012 Reader Poll.”

2012 ARRG League MVP May Require Stitches – a multi-positional player for both the M-80s local squad and for Arch Rival’s travelling All-Stars – is a finalist for “2012 Most Valuable Blocker.” The Arch Rival All-Stars’ two-bout series with the Ohio Roller Girls is a finalist for “2012 Best Rivalry.”
Voting for the fourth-annual poll is open to registered voters until 6 pm Thursday night. GO TO THIS LINK RIGHT HERE TO VOTE. (Reminder: Registration is required to view the complete list of finalists and to vote. Registration is simple and takes mere seconds.)
The DNN Reader Poll recognizes outstanding individual and league performances throughout the calendar year. Following an initial set of five nominees per category – as selected by the editorial staff at Derby News Network – visitors of the website are eligible to suggest open nominations. Following the open nomination thread, ten finalists are selected in each category overall.
In the case of May Require Stitches, making the final cut contained plenty of drama.
Stitches and Minnesota Rollergirls’ blocker Diamond Rough – both suggestions for inclusion by the public – were tied for the final slot in the open nomination thread last Wednesday. As a result, DNN conducted a 12-hour “tiebreaker” last Thursday on its Facebook page to see which skater would get the nomination. A mind-numbing 1,200 votes were logged in the twelve-hour window of opportunity… and the decision was pretty much a 50/50 split.
As a result, the DNN editorial board determined that due to the close vote both skaters would be nominated as a finalist in the “2012 Most Valuable Blocker” category.
Stitches’ nomination marks the first time an individual ARRG skater has been nominated as a finalist in the DNN poll.
Meanwhile, the ARRG All-Stars are finalists in the “Best Rivalry” category following two hard-fought bouts against Ohio, the current fourth-ranked team in the WFTDA North Central region. The rivalry between the two sets of rollers saw Ohio sweep the two-bout set in 2012 and shake the complexion of the region’s rankings in the process. In March, Ohio thumped ARRG 168-115 in a closed bout in Columbus, OH. Then in September, Ohio bested the locals in the opening round of the WFTDA North Central playoffs, 142-132. The rivalry was a selected finalist outright by the editorial staff of DNN.
This marks the second consecutive year that ARRG has made the final round in this category. Last year, ARRG’s four-bout series with the Chicago Outfit was a finalist for DNN’s “Best Rivalry.”
St. Louis roller derby also has representation in a trio of categories by ARRG’s “brothers in derby” – the STL Gatekeepers. Multi-positional player Magnum P.I.M.P. is a finalist for “Best Double Threat – Men’s” and blocker Percy Controll is a finalist in the “Best Blocker – Men’s” category. Also, two separate Gatekeeper bouts are finalists for “Men’s Bout of the Year,” a May match-up against the New York Shock Exchange at Spring Roll in Fort Wayne, Indiana and the MRDA Championship bout against Your Mom Men’s Roller Derby in October at Queeny Park. Both bouts were determined on the final jam of regulation.
Winners will be announced by DNN upon conclusion of the voting.
So, what are you waiting for? Go on over to DNN and vote for St. Louis derby!
