AVAST YE, SCALLYWAGS! – IT’S ARCHIE!!!!

All-Star Mascot Entertains All At Local ARRG Bouts

by The Grand Poobah – Photos by Bob Dunnell

Mascots for athletic teams have been a long-time staple of enjoyment for fans – especially little ones.

The local contingent has its strong list of credentialed characters. The Cardinals have Fredbird, the Blues have Louie and St. Louis University has…….well, I’m not quite sure what that thing actually is…..

And then there’s Archie – ARRG’s official mascot – perhaps the most imposing one of them all. Dressed in full pirate regalia (complete with spyglass to rise to his massive 15-pound head), legend has it that this buccaneer in December heroically bounded a rock concert stage with the enthusiasm of a nine-year-old on a sugar fix.

new-archie-11A presence at ARRG events since late 2008, the seaman performs for audiences at ARRG All-Star bouts at the All-American Sports Mall, and even makes the occasional road trip when opportunity presents itself.

And to backtrack, he’s not imposing because he’s mean-looking, but our juggernaut of jeerleading seems like the kind who would not hesitate to hypothetically make one of his fuzzy counterparts walk the plank, if necessary.

For the purposes of anonymity, we’ll keep Archie’s complete identity concealed as best as possible (think about it, have you ever seen an interview with Fredbird sans mask?)

And although the man underneath the costume has the distinction as being the oldest active jeerleader in the WFTDA, let’s just say there’s a person in there that’s young at heart.

The idea of the swashbuckler was dreamt as the ARRG All-Stars battled the NWA Killbillies at an October 2008 bout. A man who sat in the audience, who had no prior connection to the league, became enamored with what he saw on and off the track, and wanted to make a contribution.

“I saw the girls skate out, waving pirate flags, and saw that some of the fans were waving pirate flags as well,” recalls Archie about that night. “I read something in the program about them wearing pirate socks and saw the pictures. I had just attended the Pirate Festival (in Missouri) in September. I looked around and saw the Jeerleaders cheering them on and noticed that they didn’t have a mascot. I thought to myself, ‘I could do this.’”

After contacting the league, and after a brief volunteer inauguration, the plan was in place to make the fan’s conceptualization a reality – the first step being to give the character a name and an identity.

“I was supposed to be ‘Louie the Pirate’,” says the buccaneer, which would have been a play off the performer’s name. “Then, we discovered that the St. Louis Blues’ mascot was named ‘Louie,’ so we had to come up with a different name. ”

An ARRG skater suggested “Archie the Pirate,” which not only fit the character but also effectively incorporated the league’s name.

Next came the costume - portions of which are hand-made, others fabricated by trade smiths, some store-bought – all self-purchased. However, the outfit needed that little extra sizzle. As one who was influenced by major-league baseball mascots like Fredbird and the Philly Phanatic, the newbie entertainer soon found his hidden treasure – which became Archie’s most recognizable feature – the giant pirate’s head.

“I remembered seeing a pirate head at the costume shop that I deal with,” says Archie. “Well, I kind of had two to choose from, but the one (not chosen) was kind of scary and not real-kid friendly. So I went with the bigger one.”

Obtaining the massive head was the simple part – the next task was to actually maneuver both port and starboard with it on, a function made difficult with the small 1″ x 5″ window of visibility.

“I read up on being a mascot,” says the performer. “I saw where they suggested that I have an escort so I roped Captain Kid (his shipmate) into helping me out there. We practiced at my home before the first bout, going up and down stairs and stuff. We came up with our own sign language system to help us communicate with each other.”

new-archie-2With all preparation in place, it came the time for the near 7-footer’s inaugural journey into jeerleaderdom at a home ARRG All-Star bout against Kansas City.

The end result?

“Well, I for one was really nervous,” recalls the swashbuckler. “So I thought I would warm up by going over to the K.C. side, to sort of be a welcoming committee for the league. Things over there went well. I even had my picture taken.

“Then I moseyed over to our side. There was one kid crying before I even got there. I don’t know if he was crying about me or what! That almost blew my idea right there. But all in all, the rest of the crowd was really receptive, and I have to say, downright supportive.”

Archie prefers to keep his act simple – waves, handshakes, high-fives, the blowing of kisses and a tip of the cap to ladies – perhaps by design because of the excruciating conditions while performing in the summertime kiln known as the All-American Sports Mall.

“For my age, I’m in pretty good shape, but there was concern (about the heat)” says Archie. “I went to the drugstore and got one of those ice gel coolers that you wear around your back, only I wear it on my head. I also have gel packs stuffed into my waistband. Those I usually change out at halftime. ”

But even with precaution, the paraphernalia can be a perilous to even to a professional plunderer.

“I remember one bout (a doubleheader) where the air conditioning was out,” says Archie. “It was in the 90′s outside. They gave me the option of not doing it that night, but I told them I wanted to – didn’t want to disappoint the fans.

“I kept lifting up the head and getting big gulps of ice water all night long to keep myself hydrated. The icebag on my head ran hot about a half-hour before the bout was over. That was rough, but I made it through. Everyone told me I went above and beyond the call that night. I was drenched in sweat. My boots were even soaked.”

But just like all of his contemporaries, the literal “sweat-equity” involved in being a mascot is personally satisfying when it comes to the end result – enjoyment by the little landlubbers.

“I’ve always wanted the character to be something for the kids to watch,” says the mascot. “I remember (one skater’s) daughter being so enamored with me. She brought her friends to the game and had pictures taken with me. I think she’s my biggest fan. I love having my picture taken with the kids, although the whole ‘getting back up after I bend down’ part is a challenge. Thank heavens for Captain Kid!”

new-archie-3The interplay with the adults also leads to random moments of fun, not to mention many photographic opportunities. And to keep the home audience guessing, the jeerleader will occasionally arrive as a completely different character, such as a 6-foot tall M-80 firecracker. The performer has even hinted at the debut of a new character to be revealed in a few weeks.

So one might ask – and in the case of Archie, one HAS to ask - considering the physical demands in portraying a mascot coupled with the additional expense of self-financing the character, why would one do this?

“My motivation? I’ve always had a dream of being a big-headed mascot for a sports team,” replies Archie. “Something like that had always been on my bucket list. And at my age, that list is getting short. I’ve done a lot in my lifetime and this might be the last fun thing that I’ll do in my lifetime. So considering that, I’m really motivated to give it all I’ve got and do the best I can.

“This being one of the last things on my bucket list, that’s my motivation. Then I look through the hole in my costume head and see all the smiles on all the faces. And if even though it costs me money to do this, all those smiles are worth it – definitely.”

Aye, matey.

Defending Champs Win 2010 Opener

Starry’s Flight Propels Epic Night for Stunt Devils

by The Grand Poobah

(ST. LOUIS, MO) It didn’t take long for the defending ARRG champions to send a message that their league title win in 2009 was no fluke.

Buoyed by a historical 80+ point performance from jammer Starry Starry Fight, the Stunt Devils bullied their way to a 140-88 win over the M-80s in the ARRG season opener in front of 1,000+ at the All-American Sports Mall Saturday night.

Starry battled the bout in protective gear but still managed to pace the Stunts (1-0) in their victory, with a bout-high nine lead jams.

“A jammer is only as good as her blockers, and I barely got hit at all, which made it easy for me,” said Starry after the bout. “I think it was the idea that we had a lot to prove after we won the championship. We wanted to show the M-80s that we meant it the first time and we meant it this time.”

Starry’s domination in scoring, however, was not evident until after an early rally by the M-80s.

An 8-0 run by the girls in red, thanks in part by veterans Joanie Rollomoan and Nikki Vixxen, gave the M-80s an early 9-2 lead five minutes into the first frame.

Then Starry’s fight took flight. The jammer’s 15-point slamma ramma gave the defending champs its first lead of the night at 17-8, 8:30 into the first half.

Consecutive nine-point jams by newcomer Morgan Le Faetal and defending ARRG scoring champion Artemischief gave the Stunt Devils a 35-8 lead with 17:00 left in the first half.

But the M-80′s, lead by two veterans and a newcomer to fold, cut into the defecit.

Rollomoan’s 8-point jam, followed by strong jams by newcomer Black Market Baby and returning jammer Enya Nightmare, cut the gap to 47-25 with 8:45 left in the first half. Nightmare followed later in the frame with a 12-point jam with 3:42 left to make it a 54-37 contest.

Then, it was time for the star to shine, as Starry’s 13-point jam with 1:50 remaining extended the lead to 67-37 for the Stunts.

As time expired in the first half, a frozen clock presented a golden opportunity for the M-80s to catch up, yet a seven-point jam by the Stunt’s Artemischief gave the defending champs a 74-37 lead into the half time break.

The second half saw the M-80s quick out of the gate. Strong jams by Nightmare, Baby and Vixxen saw the lead cut to 76-46.

Then it was time to show the All-American jams of which legends are made.

Starry Starry Fight came out with a 20-point jam with 21:00 left in the contest to extend the lead to 96-46 Stunts. This catapulted five lead jams in a row for the defending champs, which extended the lead to 116-55 nine minutes after the Starry quadruple grand slam.

“She’s just ridiculous,” said veteran Stunt blocker Grave Danger following the game. “She’s an awesome jammer.”

As the second half continued, the Stunts provided some much needed action for its bench as South City Shiner and Baretta Michaels saw turns at the lead jammer position. Meanwhile, the M-80s continued with an attack of Nightmare, BMB and Vixxen down the stretch.

Yet, near the end, the final lead jammer for the Stunts came directly to its All-Star, as Starry put up a 3-point jam with 3:00 left to round out the scoring for the ladies in purple and to provide the fans a taste for potential things to come in 2010.

Even though Starry’s 80-point-plus historic night was the focal point of the evening, a Stunt veteran was quick to acknowledge the newcomers to the team.

“Right now my personal favorite is Miss Morgan Le Faetal,” said Danger. “She’s gonna be a fierce jammer this season. She really fought her way through the pack. Cookies N. Cream, you can tell she’s gonna be a really good blocker. And Whip Scream, you can definitely tell she’s gonna be a good jammer. She’s got the legs for it. And Domme E. Nation, a transfer from Florida, you can tell from tonight that she bleeds purple.”

And even with the loss for the M-80s (0-1), the veteran voice of the team found plenty of positives for the young group of skaters.

“You saw a lot of rookies tonight and I thought they all worked really well together,” said blocker/jammer Joanie Rollomoan. “I’m actually really excited. They were all my newbies at one point. We (the M-80s) are in the same place that we were three years ago. And then we won like every game for three years, so I’m really excited.”

The M-80s return to action on Saturday, February 6 against the new-look Smashinistas (0-0) at the All-American Sports Mall. Doors open at 7 pm. Bout begins at 8 pm.

Poobah’s Notes from Saturday

  • Saturday’s attendance, no joke, was a recorded 1,000+, which far exceeded expectations. On behalf of ARRG Nation, I can’t thank each and everyone of you enough for your support at our home opener. You all braved the chilly elements to make it a special night of ARRG action.
  • We knew that the attendance was huge when Joanie Rollomoan crashed into the splash zone four rows deep. Nonetheless, we extend a big thank you to all those that spread the good word of ARRG leading up to the event. We also extend a big thank you to those in the St. Louis media that helped us promote the message, including KPLR-TV, KTRS-AM, KPNT-FM, the Riverfront Times and numerous other media outlets. If we forgot you from this list – don’t take it personal – we really do appreciate your co-operation!
  • We also extend apologies to those who were turned away at the door due to capacity issues. We hope that this doesn’t deter you from attending the next home bout, which takes place on Saturday, February 6 at the All-American Sports Mall with the M-80s looking to even their record against the new-look Smashinistas.
  • Speaking of which, a big THANK YOU to Smashies’ co-captain Eli Wallop, who provided inside expertise, not to mention a few quick jabs, during our opening bout of the 2010 season. Expect more ARRG veterans to join the derbycast booth during the season. Grave Danger’s on tap for the February bout.
  • January looks to be a busy month, with a trivia contest set for Saturday, January 23 and an appearance at the St. Louis Auto show later this month. Keep up to date with the latest in ARRG information here.
  • M-80′s blocker Suri O’ Killer suffered a potentially serious injury early in Saturday’s bout, but early prognosis looks like all is well with the girl that bleeds red unconditonally. She even managed to get one last jam in before the expiration of Saturday’s match-up – thus proving her mental and physical toughness. One has no doubt that she’ll be back in the fold Saturday, February 6.

ARRG’S 2010 SEASON STARTS THIS SATURDAY!!!

Bout One Features Re-Match of Last Year’s Title Tiltjan-10-matchup2

by Hells LaBelle

This weekend begins another journey into the world of Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby here in St. Louis with the Arch Rival Rollergirls. I’m particularly excited about this season because the league enters this year with more unknowns than any other season that I have worked with these athletes. My how the landscape has changed in the turn of just one year on the calendar!

With so many faces on all three local teams that have bid farewell to playing the sport of roller derby, new faces have arrived on the scene to show the area fanbase what they can do.

This is definitely the case with the M-80′s, who lost a small army of players like The Seige, Jawbreaker, Shanghai Lily, Trixie, Riddle Lynn, Roxy, Buns, Dani, Frau, and Overland. Some see this as the Demolition of a once-proven Dynasty…

Others (like me) see it as an opportunity. You see, with all the talent that exists in the list of names I just rattled off, there had to be support players. Players that were new to the sport, learning their craft, and taking as much from these leaders as they could. Players that were needed in practices to challenge the team leaders and keep them sharp as well. Players that unfortunately had to sit and watch during pivotal times in bouts because they may not have been ready or as skilled as the veterans.

Well, ready or not… their time is now. I know every one of them believes they have what it takes to step into the spotlight and show the league exactly what they are made of. And if you’ve seen Jack U. Up, Josie, Cherry or Smack skate, you know they are ready.

Nikki Vixxen

Ana Warpath

The M-80′s don’t lack leadership by any stretch. Nikki Vixen and Ana Warpath are proven blockers in the league that really know how to lay out a big hit when the team needs one to get fired up. Joanie Rollmoan has won the “Fearless Leader” award at the ARRG banquet multiple times. She trains all the “newbies,” and continues to be one of the most respected, not to mention talented, players in the league. Enya Nightmare, despite knee surgery that put her on the shelf for a while, has come back over the course of a year and evolved into a determined leader, and a smarter player. Keligula is a co-captain on the Travel Team, a skater that stood out in her rookie season, and is one of the fastest jammers in ARRG.

So don’t let the 10-skater roster fool you… The M-80′s are still loaded. Not to mention blood-thirsty, after seeing their hopes at a three-peat dashed by the Stunt Devils.

Which brings me to their opponent on Saturday night, the Stunt Devils. Their problem is exactly the opposite of the M-80′s. They aren’t seeing their numbers dwindle, they’re seeing their roster expand. Not only do they have younger players that continue to improve with every season, but they’ve drafted more talented players for this year’s roster. Their depth is exactly the problem that team captains want to have.

Mayor Francis Slayer

Starry Starry Fight

Led by Mayor Francis Slayer and Starry Starry Fight (two of the best in the business), the Stunts also boast the leadership of the league MVP (and leading scorer), Artemischief, former co-captain of the undefeated St. Lunachix, Miss Lippy, and one of the most notorious skaters in the entire league (who is a former Stunt Captain herself) Grave Danger. We also cannot look past the most “cerebral” member of ARRG, Bertha Venus. I know she will look for some more time on the track this season and is ready to impress.

What impresses me about this Stunt Devil team is how all their younger players stepped up their game to a new level last season. When given more time on the floor, players like Danikka Doom, Deathica Steele, South City Shiner, and Smarty McFly (who really broke onto the scene last year) answered the bell and came out swinging. All the ladies I mentioned benefited from Travel Team playing time (either on the A or B-teams), which made their endurance and track vision exponentially better.

The damage of retirement was minimal in the sense that while their former team captain will not be skating with them anymore. Crime Minister is a bench coach for the Stunts. So her knowledge and experience in this league is still a presence on the Stunt Devil bench. Peppy Longlegs and the Pro-Agonist are tough losses, as both skaters had turned a corner last season and were showing real signs of becoming impact players. And the absence of Reyna and Dawn in the pack will be noticeable. But the new class of ladies in purple is ready to join a roster of champions.

Now we get to see their first round draft pick, Domme E. Nation, in action. I caught a glimpse of her in St. Lunachix action last season, and let me tell ya, she was a fast learner and is ready to block some girls this year. Cookies N. Cream, Le Faetal, Whip Scream and Beretta Michaels are all getting more experience with Travel Team practices and should mesh into the roster nicely.

But what about the rivalry that these two teams have shown? Last season, both of these teams scored over 100 points against one another in winning AND losing efforts. The Stunts took their victory under the brightest lights… the lights of the ARRG Championship. The Stunt Devils became the first team to hold the official ARRG trophy that doesn’t wear Red. They ended the run of M-80′s championships (put an end to thoughts of a threepeat).

The M-80′s want their trophy back. That journey begins Saturday.

The Stunt Devils want to prove to the league and their fans that their Championship last season was not a fluke. That journey begins Saturday.

The Smashinistas will be our hostess team, but will really be there scouting the heck out of both of these teams. They want a taste of their first championship, and I will have much more to write about them before the next bout… That journey begins Saturday.

This season will be a long and unpredictable journey… not to mention a bumping freakin’ ride…

I’ll see you there.
